The following selection of papers supports the need for better reading and measurement tools. The ACRIN Breast Screening Study, phase 1 report, shows that breast ultrasound used in conjunction with mammography increases breast cancer detection rates:

“Combined Screening with Ultrasound and Mammography vs Mammography Alone in Women at Elevated Risk of Breast Cancer”
Journal of the American Medical Association, May 14, 2008

This original paper makes a compelling case for the use of ultrasound imaging in diagnosing breast lesions:

“Solid Breast Nodules: Use of Sonography to Distinguish between Benign and Malignant Lesions” A. Thomas Stavros, et. al. Radiology 1995:196 123-124

The following paper points out the significant variability among readers when using ultrasound to diagnose breast imaging:

“Sonography of Solid Breast Lesions: Observer Variability of Lesion Description and Assessment” Jay Baker et al AJR 1999:172, 1621-1625

These papers show the benefit of structured reporting:

“Structured Reporting: Saying the Same Thing the Same Way” Radiology Today, August 11, 2008

“Quality of breast imaging reports falls short of recommended standards” Health Scieneces Journal
